Attorney General Letitia James highlighted an elaborate scam where fraudsters targeted remote job seekers with false promises, tricking them into investing in cryptocurrency.
Victims were misled into believing they would gain money by reviewing products, but their funds ended up in the scammers' wallets, exposing the vulnerabilities in online job searches.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz emphasized the importance of tracing the stolen funds, indicating that over $2 million has been identified and is being secured for eventual restitution.
James stated, "Deceiving New Yorkers looking to take on remote work and earn money to support their families is cruel and unacceptable," showcasing the seriousness of these scams.
