"Washington is still operating as if it's March 2020," Sen. Joni Ernst remarked, highlighting the significant shift in federal employee work patterns since the pandemic.
With only 6% of federal employees working in-person full-time and nearly one-third fully remote, the government faces a dramatic occupancy decline, now at 12%.
"You may be more likely to see a ghost than a bureaucrat haunting the halls of some government buildings in Washington, D.C. these days," Ernst quipped, underscoring dwindling office presence.
Despite recommendations for federal employees to return to the office for effective communication, there appears to be a resistance rooted in established remote work policies.
