Microsoft's RTO Crackdown Will Begin in February 2026
"Here at Tech.co, we've kept an eye on the number of fully remote positions open at Microsoft over the past few years, and a trend has become clear. In August 2024, 883 fully remote jobs were available. By November, this had fallen to 400-something postions, a trend that continued in December, when we spotted 417 remote positions open. In February 2025, just 313 work-from-home jobs were open."
"Today? That number stands at just 89 positions. In 2026, it looks set to drop further. Fully remote positions will likely never go away entirely. Even at major companies with RTO policies, exceptions will be made for certain employees with the right leverage. However, Microsoft is finally joining the majority of tech companies that are pushing their employees towards in-office work."
In August 2024, 883 fully remote jobs were available at Microsoft. By November 2024 that number had fallen to the 400s, and in December it stood at 417. In February 2025, 313 work-from-home jobs remained. Today there are just 89 fully remote positions. The count looks set to decline further in 2026. Fully remote roles will likely not vanish entirely, as exceptions will be made for employees with sufficient leverage. Microsoft is aligning with the majority of tech companies that are encouraging or requiring in-office work. This trend marks a clear reduction in work-from-home availability across major tech employers.
