Italy is offering a new 'digital nomad' visa that allows Americans to relocate for up to a year, with the option to renew annually. Without a visa, foreigners can only stay in Italy for up to 90 days and they cannot work.
The visa is available to 'digital nomads and remote workers' who 'carry out a highly qualified work activity through the use of technological tools that allow working remotely.' Eligible applicants include freelancers, self-employed workers, and remote employees meeting specific criteria.
To qualify, applicants need a university or college degree, work experience, an employment contract, proof of income, housing in Italy, health insurance, and a clean criminal record. The application fee is just over $120, with visas expected to be issued in 30 to 90 days.
