A new 'bucket list' country just loosened rules for digital nomads
Briefly

The rise of remote work has spurred numerous countries to implement digital nomad visas, allowing foreigners to stay longer and work remotely while in the country. Nations like New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Italy have embraced this trend, recognizing its potential to enhance tourism. New Zealand's recent decision permits visitors to work for up to 90 days without altering the traditional tourist visa framework, creating a new niche market aimed at helping its economy recover from pandemic impacts.
"This is a brand-new market of tourist New Zealand can tap into," New Zealand Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said at a Jan. 27 press conference. "We want people to see our country as the ideal place to visit and work while they do it."
Over the last decade, even nations with strong economies saw the benefits and came onboard. Japan, South Korea and Italy are all among the list of countries that either launched or expanded such programs in 2024.
