When "She's the Victim" Isn't the Whole Story
Relationships involving girls and women with narcissistic traits can feel stable one moment and then shift into conflict, blame, emotional volatility, and confusion. Unpredictability can leave others depleted and unsure of their standing. Vulnerability and emotional distress can interfere with accountability by redirecting attention from harmful behaviors to emotional pain, distress, or victimization. People raising concerns may feel dismissed, invalidated, or blamed for bringing issues up. Partial accounts of events can omit context, behavioral patterns, or others’ emotional impact, increasing disorientation when the person presents as deeply wounded or misunderstood. When self-reflection, empathy, or accountability feels threatening, feedback may be treated as an attack on identity, triggering blame-shifting, emotional escalation, withdrawal, or reversing victim and offender roles.
