Gallup polling reported U.S. alcohol consumption declined for three years before 2025, affecting both the share of drinkers and the number of drinks among drinkers. The drinking rate fell to 54%, the lowest since Gallup began tracking in 1939, surpassing the prior low of 55% in 1958. From 1997 to 2023, about 60% of Americans consistently reported drinking. Gallup suggested the decline could continue in 2026. In 2023, the WHO stated no level of alcohol is safe, saying negative effects start with the first sip and evidence cannot show a carcinogenic threshold where effects begin.
