"People are living longer and longer lives than before, but the pace of growth in life expectancy has dropped sharply since the early twentieth century."
Average expected lifespan continues to increase in high-income countries, yet the rate of increase has slowed substantially. People are living longer than previous generations, but the pace of growth in life expectancy has fallen sharply since the early twentieth century. Continued longevity gains now coexist with smaller annual improvements. The reduction in the speed of increase indicates that drivers of past rapid gains are having diminished effects even as baseline lifespans rise. Slower incremental improvements in life expectancy alter planning considerations for health systems, pensions, and social policy compared with eras of faster growth.
