What is Alaskapox? Virus symptoms, signs, and what to know about human transmission
Briefly

The victim, who was immunocompromised, first noticed a bump on his right armpit last September and was prescribed antibiotics. Those were ineffective and he later experienced fatigue and pain and was hospitalized in mid-November. Later testing confirmed he was infected with Alaskapox. He died from malnutrition plus kidney and respiratory failure in late January.
Has the Alaskapox virus been spotted outside of Alaska? So far, no. Six of the known infections have been in the Fairbanks area, with one occurring in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, south of Anchorage.
