Violence is the leading cause of death for Alameda County residents ages 15 to 19 and 20 to 24, and the second leading cause for ages 10 to 14. County data shows homicides have declined since 2022 while statewide homicides have ticked slightly upward. Oakland homicides are trending down, but Hayward is seeing an increase. Deaths related to domestic violence have spiked, and Berkeley is experiencing a rise in suicides despite an overall county decline. The Public Protection Committee held a special meeting on gun violence and prevention programs, and the county committed an additional $3 million over three years.
