"Sick days are costing the whole of the UK a lot of money, and that's one of the reasons we're involved in the prevention sprint, to look at ways to try and stop people from becoming ill in the first place."
"Mental health was the leading cause of longterm absence among TfL staff in 2025, accounting for 30% of cases."
"There is also another side to sickness absence, which is presenteeism. In organisations where you have very low sickness absence you may have high presenteeism where people are actually at work when they shouldn't be and they're unwell."
Transport for London is intensifying efforts to reduce employee absence as part of a government initiative. The overall sickness rate at TfL is 6.3%, with long-term sickness accounting for the majority of lost days. Mental health is a significant concern, representing 30% of long-term absence cases. TfL is implementing support measures such as physiotherapy and counselling. The aim is to prevent illness and address presenteeism, where employees work while unwell. Programs involving volunteer staff are also in place to assist colleagues experiencing trauma.
