Attorneys general from 22 states have launched a lawsuit against the Trump administration to prevent deep funding cuts by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on medical research grants. The cuts proposed by the administration aim to reduce funding for indirect costs from 27-28% to a capped 15%, potentially jeopardizing vital research projects in cancer and chronic diseases. Critics, including hospitals and universities, argue this decision undermines public health and competitiveness in the medical field, while the NIH defends the move by citing cost comparisons with other foundations.
"We will not allow the Trump Administration to unlawfully undermine our economy, hamstring our competitiveness, or play politics with our public health," said Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell.
The vast majority of medical research in the U.S. is supported by NIH funding, which includes over 2,800 hospitals, medical schools, universities, and other research institutions nationwide.
