Fern, a harbor seal pup, was rescued from Brighton beach after being found unresponsive and showing concerning behaviors indicative of exhaustion or illness. Rescuers from RSPCA Mallydams worked diligently to rehabilitate him, providing feeding and antibiotics for a bite wound. Upon arriving at the rescue center, Fern was underweight and downcast, but he began to respond positively to care. There are indications that he may have been separated from his mother due to a predator attack, adding to the urgency of his rescue and recovery.
Fern was found on the beach on 7 August and did not respond even as children approached. This kind of behaviour is very concerning in seals and signals serious exhaustion or illness.
He's now in safe hands with our expert team, and we're doing everything we can to give him the second chance he deserves.
Staff at the centre said Fern was severely underweight and looked very downcast when he arrived at around 9pm, though he soon perked up after regular feeding.
Fern might have been separated from her mother because of an attack from predators.
