Opioid deaths now lowest in 3 years, but still worse than pre-pandemic
Briefly

The CDC estimates that there were 75,091 opioid overdose deaths for the year ending in April 2024, suggesting a notable decline from previous years, yet still significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels.
Fatal overdoses from other groups of drugs, like cocaine and other stimulants, have also been largely trending down, but the recent decline in opioid overdoses has driven the largest share of this year’s slowdown in deaths, down around 10% from its peak in August.
Several states in the Northwest, including Alaska, Colorado, and Washington, are still reporting overdoses nearly as high or higher than previous records, indicating disparities in the crisis.
Former President Trump has highlighted the decline in opioid deaths during his campaign, pledging to work with states on drug addiction solutions while criticizing the current administration’s track record on overdose deaths.
