'My three children needed transplants, now I'm giving back'
Briefly

The Voluntary Car Service of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) relies on over 75 volunteer drivers who provide free transportation for patients undergoing medical treatments. These volunteers offer vital assistance, fostering goodwill and friendships. Willie Hutchinson, a volunteer whose children received kidney transplants, exemplifies this spirit, referring to his efforts as a way to 'pay back.' He was recognized with a British Empire Medal for his dedication. Volunteers, while not paid, receive mileage allowances for their contributions to healthcare.
"Somebody did it for them so I'm doing it for somebody else," he said regarding his motivation to volunteer.
"They go above and beyond on the daily," said Yvonne McMichael from NIAS, highlighting the volunteers' contribution.
In 2023, the grandfather of six was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to healthcare.
The volunteer drivers are not employed or paid by NIAS, only receiving a mileage allowance for transporting patients.
