A Long Island fire chief was caught on video berating a distressed 10-year-old girl during an emergency medical call. The child's mother expressed outrage, stating that Alt failed to protect her daughter and feared the incident would damage her trust in first responders. Alt was recorded shouting at the girl as she was being loaded into an ambulance. Following the incident, the fire chief was suspended, and the North Babylon Fire Company issued a statement condemning his behavior. The child's family reported that she is experiencing anxiety and may require therapy as a result.
"He was supposed to protect her and help her, not verbally abuse her," the girl's mother stated. The mother fears her daughter will now "lose faith" in the police and fire departments and has been left "scared" over the incident.
"Shut the f-k up! It's like this with you every f-king week!" the fire chief was heard shouting at the girl, who was crying for her mother's support.
"The Fire Company does not condone this behavior and deems it unacceptable," stated the company's executive board in response to the incident involving Chief Peter Alt.
"She has anxiety. She will need therapy," the child's grandmother revealed, noting that the girl has secluded herself at home and is reluctant to attend school.
