Is Austin a Vision Zero Leader Hiding In Plain Sight? - Streetsblog USA
"Our long term goal is always going to be zero, and over these first 10 years, obviously, we haven't achieved that,"
"But when you look closer into the numbers, you can really see that where we focused our resources - and especially our infrastructure funding - we're seeing pretty significant reductions in injuries, fatalities, and comprehensive costs."
"One of the messages we're trying to stress is: this is just the start,"
Since committing to Vision Zero in 2015, Austin recorded at least 75 road deaths each year for ten years, with 97 fatalities in 2024, seven more than 2023. City transportation officials characterize many 2024 deaths as avoidable and unacceptable. Targeted infrastructure investments and focused resource allocation produced significant reductions in injuries, fatalities, and comprehensive costs in areas that received funding. Austin was an early U.S. adopter of Vision Zero after New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Voters approved $95 million between 2017 and 2020 for safety improvements, and officials say deeper, continued investment is required amid state and federal headwinds.
