"This is my sad duty to inform you that one of our passengers suddenly passed away last night. Tragic as it is, it was due to natural causes, we believe. And also whatever health issues he was struggling with, I'm told by the doctor, were not infectious, so the ship is safe when it comes to that."
"It turns out we were not well-informed. It's very scary because it was nothing that we were ready for. Knowing that we didn't get isolated and we didn't take any caution for a solid 12 days, for my part, is a very sad situation."
The MV Hondius cruise ship experienced a deadly hantavirus outbreak resulting in three passenger deaths and five infections. When the captain announced the first death on April 12, he assured passengers the deceased's health issues were not infectious and the ship remained safe. A Turkish travel vlogger aboard documented the announcement and later revealed passengers were not adequately informed about the actual infectious disease threat. Passengers continued normal activities without isolation or precautions for 12 days after learning of the death. Authorities in multiple countries are now tracing passengers who disembarked from the vessel.
