"We have a pretty lively downtown atmosphere, which the city is really proud of," Holt said. "Unfortunately, the downside of that is where there's a good time, people drink alcohol and that leads to DUIs.""
Mountain View recorded 336 collisions in 2024, with 62 primarily caused by driving under the influence. DUI incidents increased from 48 in 2022 and 42 in 2023. Unsafe turns, unsafe speeds and failure to yield were also frequent primary causes. The Mountain View Police Department received a $75,000 state grant to fund officer overtime, training and education for traffic and DUI enforcement. Directed patrols aim to improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, with weekends showing higher DUI incidence. In September, officers made 108 vehicle stops, 14 pedestrian stops and issued 81 failure-to-yield citations.
