On July 1, a forest ranger responded to an emergency situation at Peekamoose Blue Hole in Denning. A 13-year-old child from Brooklyn became unconscious after being neck-deep in the cold water for about 10 minutes. Upon rescue, the teenager showed signs of distress, including uncontrollable shivering and a decreased pulse. Ranger Jefferey took immediate action to insulate the teen from the cold ground and provided warmth with sleeping bags and a tarp for protection from a thunderstorm before transporting the child to a hospital for further care. NY state DEC forest rangers regularly assist with similar rescues across the state.

Ranger Jefferey found the child had been neck-deep in water for about 10 minutes, lost consciousness, and exhibited symptoms like uncontrollable shivering and a decreased pulse.
To stabilize the teen, Ranger Jefferey insulated them from the ground, wrapped them in sleeping bags, and provided shelter using a tarp during a thunderstorm.
The collaborative efforts of DEC forest rangers and local agencies enable effective rescues of lost, injured, or distressed individuals throughout New York State.
