"A court order Thursday is set to restore Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November after the funds were halted throughout the country under the government shutdown that has now persisted for 38 days. During that time President Donald Trump's administration has resisted funding the program, asking a federal appeals court on Friday to block the court order and repeatedly refusing to use an emergency fund of $5 billion."
"SFGATE visited the Alameda County Community Food Bank on Wednesday afternoon, where many of the 175,607 CalFresh recipients in the county turned for food in the current circumstances. The parking lot was completely full and dozens of people waited inside for their number to be called. Elliot Nicks, an Oakland resident, told SFGATE that he just renewed his SNAP benefits before the shutdown began. Nicks said he visited the food bank Wednesday because he is worried about how he will feed himself and his four children."
A court order aims to restore SNAP benefits for November after funds were halted nationwide during a 38-day government shutdown. The administration resisted funding the program, asked an appeals court to block the order, and repeatedly refused to use a $5 billion emergency fund. Families have experienced at least a week without benefits, and uncertainty has hurt CalFresh recipients and local food banks. Food banks have seen surges, with Alameda County noting 175,607 CalFresh recipients, full parking lots, and long waits. Individuals report renewed benefit concerns, loss of benefits, and reliance on food banks despite employment.
