Are Shame and Guilt Bad-Or Do We Just Need a Different Relationship With Them?
Michelle Pfeiffer plays Shyanne, a mother who became pregnant after a one-night stand with a married man, and whose daughter Margo later gives birth to a child fathered by another married man. In a parking lot outside Margo’s workplace, Shyanne breaks down after failing to babysit her grandchild, hands the boy to Margo, and declares she is a horrible grandmother and mother. The narrative frames guilt and shame as human emotions that many people handle poorly by psychologically beating themselves and verbally or physically attacking others. It links unresolved guilt and shame to vengeance, including wars where people die after being wronged.
"“I wish I could be a better person, but I'm not!...and I will not be judged, by him or anyone else.”"
