TeleMessage probes 'hack' of Signal clone used by Feds
Briefly

TeleMessage, a messaging app based on the open-source Signal, is under scrutiny after an unidentified entity accessed US governmental communications. The app, which was recently acquired by Smarsh, has temporarily shut down its services as a precautionary measure and launched an investigation with an external cybersecurity firm. The app's usage by former national security advisor Michael Waltz has raised alarms, especially given past incidents involving leaked military plans. Concerns exist regarding the app's archiving methods, with potential vulnerabilities in securely handling messaging data, particularly if messages were improperly stored.

Waltz’s use of the app emerged last week after a Reuters photo showed the advisor holding a phone running an app with a PIN verification popup.
