Junior Barros De Oliveira, 29, was charged with extortion and threats after allegedly accessing protected information from Victim 1-Brazil and demanding $3 million in Bitcoin in ransom.
According to the indictment, De Oliveira obtained confidential customer information of approximately 300,000 individuals and attempted to extort money from the victim company in violation of U.S. laws.
Each charge carries significant penalties, including prison sentences of up to 5 years for extortionate threats and 2 years for threatening communications, alongside substantial fines.
U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger highlighted the importance of this case, crediting the FBI’s Newark Field Office for their efforts in apprehending the suspect.
