South Sudan's government has postponed the general elections to December 2026 for the second time due to a lack of preparedness and economic challenges.
Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro indicated that the extension of the transitional period was in line with recommendations from both electoral institutions and the security sector.
Independent political analyst Andrea Mach Mabior cautioned against proceeding with elections that fail to meet international standards, stressing it could lead to chaos and resource wastage.
The presidency's decision was driven by the need to complete critical tasks like census, drafting a permanent constitution, and registering political parties before elections.
