The Health Behaviour In School-aged Children (HBSC) study highlights an alarming increase in problematic social media use among young people, particularly post-pandemic.
Researchers found that on average, 11% of children aged 11, 13, and 15 engaged in problematic social media use in 2022, a rise from 7% in 2018.
Dr. Jo Inchley noted that problematic use peaks among 13-year-olds, with girls showing higher rates compared to boys, raising concerns about mental health.
While the majority utilize social media in potentially beneficial ways, the problematic subset experiences addiction-like symptoms, signifying a critical need for preventive measures.
