Mr. Martin expressed disbelief over the €1.429 million expense for the Leinster House bike shelter, stating that, "There's no need for that level of expenditure. I think we need a fundamental review..." He emphasized the importance of transparency in the breakdown of costs, likening the situation to a shocking revelation in public spending.
He questioned the necessity of a new Department of Infrastructure, arguing that existing departments like Education already possess significant expertise. Martin said, "My concern with that proposal is that it would lead actually to a greater delay and even more costly expenditure over time." This pointed to potential inefficiencies in reorganizing departments.
Chairman John Conlon defended the bike shelter project's costs by stating, "Whilst it looks like and is a fairly significant cost, there are very significant mechanical, electrical and security system costs in that..." He emphasized that the expense reflected necessary security measures alongside temporary structure fees.
