Remote ID verification tech is often biased and wrong
Briefly

The study reveals that five remote identity verification technologies are unreliable, inconsistent, and exhibit bias across different demographic groups, making them inequitable overall.
The GSA found that only two of the RiDV products tested demonstrated equitable performance, while two others showed significant error rates for Black participants, and a fifth showed bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
One product had a staggering false negative rate of 50%, and even the best performer still failed to accurately verify identities 10% of the time.
The GSA stated, 'This study confirms that it is necessary to evaluate products across demographic groups to fully understand the performance of remote identity verification technologies.'
