Queensland has a new breach notification law going into effect July 1, 2025
Briefly

On December 4, 2023, the Queensland Parliament enacted the Information Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023, introducing significant changes to the Information Privacy Act 2009. These reforms necessitate that agencies report data breaches to the Office of the Information Commissioner Queensland (OICQ). Starting July 1, 2025, agencies must notify the OICQ and affected individuals if personal information is accessed or disclosed without authorization, resulting in potential serious harm. This move aims to enhance privacy protections and ensure accountability for potential data breaches.
The Queensland Parliament recently approved the Information Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2023, establishing a mandatory data breach notification scheme effective from July 2025.
Agencies must notify the Office of the Information Commissioner upon an eligible data breach, which could lead to serious harm if personal information is compromised.
