Pakistan intensifies pressure on Afghan refugees, NGO warns
Briefly

Since 2023, around 800,000 Afghans have been compelled to leave Pakistan, facing threats under Taliban rule, with 70% being women and children. Human Rights Watch (HRW) called on Pakistan to cease its coercive tactics toward Afghan refugees by allowing those at risk to seek protection. A looming March 31 deportation deadline adds urgency, as many Afghans lack legal documentation. The call for protection extends to the Taliban, urging them to cease reprisals against returning Afghans. Amid fears and uncertain futures, a significant number of Afghans are still awaiting resettlement options.
"Pakistani officials should immediately stop coercing Afghans to return home and give those facing expulsion the opportunity to seek protection," said Elaine Pearson, HRW's Asia director.
"Prevent any reprisals against returning Afghans and reverse their abusive policies against women and girls," HRW urged the Taliban authorities.
Pakistan has set a 31 March deadline for the deportation of all undocumented foreigners, most of whom are Afghans.
However, Pakistan has denied these allegations, arguing that it is only working to facilitate the voluntary return of Afghans.
