The health care system said it discovered the breach in early April. Mass General Brigham says it has fired two employees who allowed an unauthorized person access to patients' personal information earlier this year.
According to Mass. General Brigham, the incident may have resulted in the unauthorized person seeing names, addresses, medical record numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, and health insurance policy numbers for patients.
Some individuals also had Social Security number and/or credit card number involved. In response, Mass. General Brigham is offering 24 months of free credit monitoring to affected patients and taking privacy measures.
Mass General Brigham issued a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) notice to patients last week, disclosing the breach. Patients can contact the privacy call center for more information and enrolment in free credit monitoring.
