State Sens. Jack Martins and Steven Rhoads proposed a law to make wearing a mask illegal in New York, aimed at preventing identity concealment during crimes.
Blakeman noted the law targets hate crimes, specifically antisemitic acts post-October 7 terrorist attack, and does not affect masks worn for medical or religious reasons.
Martins and Rhoads referenced an over 100-year-old law that banned face masks, asserting that reinstating it would help combat violent acts similar to those of the KKK.
While the law currently focuses on Nassau County, there are efforts to enact it statewide, echoing concerns over anonymity in criminal activities.
