Ian McKellen shared on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that although he has physically recuperated from his fall, he is still dealing with emotional aftereffects from the incident. He described the experience as overwhelming, recounting how he thought he might be dying.
Recalling the fall, McKellen told the press, "As I slid off the stage, I said to myself, 'This is the end.' I apparently shouted out, 'My neck is broken, I'm dying,' although I don't recall saying that. It was a moment filled with fear and uncertainty about my future in acting."
