Holly Drake's career began at Nationwide Insurance, where she worked in the privacy team for 14 years, managing cyber regulations and compliance. She then transitioned to State Auto Insurance before pursuing her dream job as the Chief Privacy Officer at Ohio State University. After excelling there for four years, she was appointed Chief Information Security Officer for Ohio by Governor Mike DeWine. Throughout her journey, Drake emphasized the difficulty of leaving previous roles, while valuing her growth and expertise in cybersecurity and privacy matters.
"There were a lot of regulations coming out, affecting Nationwide and other financial institutions at that time," Drake reflects.
"It was very hard to leave Nationwide, but it ended up being a good path for me to go because I got to push my expertise and experience," she says.
"A position for the first Chief Privacy Officer at Ohio State University, was posted, and I thought, 'Wow, that's my dream job, to go back to my alma mater and help them navigate privacy with all of the different constituents that come across campus.' "
"My first boss and mentor at Nationwide had been tapped by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to bring together all of the cyber activities that the state needed."
