Michael Chakma, a Bangladeshi Indigenous rights activist, described his five years in a secret prison, stating that he had no way of tracking time or knowing day from night.
Odhikar, a prominent NGO, reported that during Sheikh Hasina's 15-year rule, more than 700 people, including activists, were forcibly disappeared, with 150 still missing.
After massive protests, Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign, with an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus now initiating a probe into the disappearances.
The Chakma people, mostly Buddhists, have historically resisted land encroachment by Bengali settlers, seeing their population in the Chittagong Hill Tracts decline from 91% in 1959 to 51%.
