Halton police bust alleged GTA auto-theft ring shipping stolen vehicles to Dubai and Morocco | CBC News
Briefly

Halton Region police charged eight men alleged to be part of an organized auto-theft ring that has stolen high-end vehicles in the GTA for overseas shipment. The operation involved stealing at least 40 vehicles worth about $3 million, using modified equipment to transport the stolen cars to Montreal for shipping to Dubai and Morocco. Investigators noted that the accused frequently traveled from Quebec to Ontario solely for the purpose of theft, highlighting a planned and coordinated effort.
Detective Constable Autumn Mills, who led the investigation, indicated that the group included lawful Algerian nationals in Montreal and raised questions about their status. Police have laid 55 charges and recovered 12 of the stolen vehicles during the months-long investigation, suggesting that the organized crime unit might uncover more thefts linked to this network. The investigators suspect targeting newer-model Toyotas, given their vulnerability to key fob reprogramming, which points to planned, systematic theft strategies.
