The call for stricter laws reflects growing concerns over knife-related crime, with specific proposals targeting blade sizes and banning switchblades to enhance public safety.
The police reported a 9.7% year-on-year rise in serious bodily harm cases involving knives, with 8,951 incidents in 2023. Despite these alarming figures, experts highlight the need for caution in interpreting such crime data, as comprehensive statistics on knife violence have only been recorded since 2021.
The German government aims to implement a law limiting public carrying of knives to blades of 6 centimeters, a significant reduction from the current 12 centimeters. This measure, along with other regulations, underscores the administration's commitment to mitigate knife-related violence in urban areas.
