Avery Ash from SAFE remarked that the new proposal by the White House serves as a "strategic political theater" addressing national security concerns that could impact various companies operating in the automotive sector.
The proposed rule by the U.S. Department of Commerce seeks to ban not only the sale or import of Chinese-connected vehicles but also the software and hardware that support such systems in American cars.
Automakers would be granted four years to eliminate Chinese-affiliated hardware from their connected vehicles, which includes components essential for internet connectivity like sensors and chipsets.
While traditional automakers face stringent restrictions, U.S.-based autonomous vehicle companies might only be limited by software regulations under the proposed ban, maintaining autonomy over their level 3 and level 4 software systems.
