More than 3,000 people died and many more had their lives ruined because of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C caused by infusions of contaminated blood first introduced into the NHS between the 1970s and 1990s. Campaigners have spent years urging governments to take responsibility. The final apology made by Rishi Sunak underscores the moral failure at the heart of our national life, and additional payments will assist those who suffered directly and indirectly.
Sunak's government commissioned the chair of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority, Sir Robert Francis, to consult with victims about the details of the compensation scheme. More than 70 recommendations were made, including an additional payment of £10,000 for those infected through unethical research, showing the depth of understanding and commitment to addressing the wrongs inflicted on the victims.
