Two Chinese nationals were arrested for shipping millions in AI chips to China without the required licenses, according to the US Department of Justice. ALX Solutions, run by Chuan Geng and Shiwei Yang, allegedly exported Nvidia's H100 GPUs, which are monitored under US export controls. The company shipped goods to transit hubs in Singapore and Malaysia, concealing the true destination, China. ALX reportedly received payments from firms in Hong Kong and China without payment from shipping companies directly. Both Geng and Yang had key decision-making roles in the operation.
According to the US Department of Justice, over the past three years, ALX Solutions illegally exported millions of dollars' worth of powerful AI chips to China without the required licenses.
California-based ALX Solutions allegedly shipped Nvidia's H100 graphics processing units internationally to companies in Singapore and Malaysia, which served as transit hubs to obscure illegal shipments to China.
Nvidia stressed that smuggling chips from the US is ineffective, stating that all sales comply with US export control rules, with thorough scrutiny even for small shipments.
The DOJ underscored that the three key operatives at ALX Solutions, Chuan Geng, Shiwei Yang, and an unnamed CEO, all held decision-making power regarding shipments.
