In a vociferous LinkedIn post, attorney David Cross laments the dwindling number of lawyers defending the Constitution, especially in light of the Trump administration's executive order aimed at Perkins Coie. Cross highlights the importance of standing up for the rule of law, insisting that lawyers should emulate those at Williams & Connolly who have bravely taken on this challenge. He warns that the erosion of legal representation threatens the core freedoms Americans enjoy, suggesting that a collective legal response is necessary as the battle for constitutional rights intensifies.
The fewer lawyers and law firms willing to stand up for the Constitution, the fewer cases that reach the courts to enforce the Constitution. This is the stuff of authoritarian rulers, not American Presidents.
We as lawyers should follow the lead of courageous counsel standing up to these attacks at Williams & Connolly defending Perkins Coie.
The rule of law is at the core of our functioning republic and the many freedoms we enjoy in America-and it's under attack today, perhaps like never before.
We as lawyers are tasked-or more precisely, entrusted-with protecting the rule of law. Suit up, friends. The fight has just begun.
