Alien: Romulus is a standalone story that takes place between the events of Alien and Aliens, wisely paying tribute to its predecessors without trying to reinvent them.
While Alien: Romulus leans into the grislier elements of its horror heritage at the expense of deeper story development, it fails to assert itself distinctly within the series.
This is the first Alien movie to feature an almost entirely young adult cast, making up in photogenic appearance what it loses in authentic workplace atmosphere.
Characters are less precisely defined; viewers familiar with the franchise will find it easy to predict which faces are fated for chaos and carnage.
