IBM's Cost of Data Breach report reveals that AI adoption is significantly outpacing security and governance efforts. 20% of surveyed organizations experienced breaches linked to shadow AI, increasing average breach costs by USD 670,000. Additionally, 13% of organizations reported breaches involving AI models or applications, often due to supply chain weaknesses. Only 3% had adequate AI access controls. Cyber criminals increasingly exploit generative AI for attacks, with AI contributing to 16% of breaches, particularly through AI-generated phishing and deepfake impersonation.
According to the company, 20% of the 600 organizations it surveyed had suffered a breach due to security incidents involving shadow AI.
On average, 16% of data breaches involved attackers using AI, most often for AI-generated phishing (37%) and deepfake impersonation attacks (35%).
