A small bakery is out thousands of dollars after a check for a 1,000-cupcake order turned out to be a scam
Briefly

The massive order soon proved too good to be true. Loria Stern, owner of Eat Your Flowers, initially welcomed the $7,500 order, seeing it as a significant boost for her business and employees. However, when the person requested the order be reduced by half and asked for a 50% refund, it raised further suspicion as she had already made the batter and purchased all the ingredients, which led to her realizing the fraud.
Stern said the bank had reassured her that she would be protected if she had an invoice and email correspondence regarding the order. However, shortly after the funds appeared, they were withdrawn from her account the very next day, and she was informed that the check was counterfeit. This left her with significant losses and frustration.
