Tacolicious, a Bay Area mini-chain, has introduced a new menu called the 'tariff-era menu,' which includes guacamole that incorporates chickpeas in place of avocado due to increased prices from Trump's tariffs on Mexican imports. These tariffs affect food prices, particularly limes and avocados, leading Tacolicious to adapt to avoid excessively high costs for customers. Menu changes include a unique avocado dish humorously named 'Beso Del Presidente,' reflecting the inflated prices reminiscent of earlier political situations, while traditional lime sides will now only be served upon request.
"The White House's order to place tariffs on goods coming from Mexico will greatly impact the cost of excellent limes and avocados we use for so much of our menu," Tacolicious stated.
"We're implementing a tariff-era menu to keep our prices from going through the roof, which includes using chickpeas instead of avocados in guacamole," said a Tacolicious representative.
"Some of these replacements are essentially Hamburger Helper-style ingredient alterations that use filler, reflecting the pinch we're feeling from tariffs," noted an industry observer.
"The new Avocado Garbanzo Guacamole ($13) is a cost-cutting combination of chickpeas and guacamole made necessary by rising import costs," described the Tacolicious menu update.
