'Slowest we've seen': The Hawaii travel boom is over
Briefly

Hawaii's tourism industry is witnessing a downturn this summer, particularly in June, with significantly reduced passenger counts compared to 2024. Experts like Bruce Fisher from Hawaii Aloha Travel note that, while July and August may maintain typical levels, growth is stagnant. This decline contrasts with the pre-pandemic peak of over 10 million visitors in 2019. Factors contributing to the decline include lingering effects from the 2023 Lahaina fire and broader economic shifts, including changes in federal policy affecting international travel to Hawaii.
"We're definitely seeing a softer summer for Hawaii travel compared to last year," Bruce Fisher, Hawaii travel adviser and owner of Hawaii Aloha Travel, told SFGATE in an email.
Hawaii has not reached 10 million visitors again since 2019. As the state worked to regain ground by enticing travelers to come back after COVID-19 and then after the Maui fires, it has been thrown another challenge: a new presidential administration.
