A McKinsey report reveals a dramatic increase in in-person work in 2024, with employers like Portland's city management pushing for a full return to City Hall to enhance collaboration and stimulate the downtown economy. Mayor Keith Wilson emphasized the benefits of face-to-face interaction, while local companies such as Nike and Intel are also tightening remote work policies. Despite this push, flexibility remains a key aspect, and not all employees are back to pre-pandemic office presence levels. Overall, the trend indicates a significant shift in workplace dynamics post-pandemic.
"Working face-to-face cultivates the collaboration, camaraderie and innovation our city deserves," said Mayor Keith Wilson in an email to employees.
"There is a perception among senior leaders that productivity is better accomplished in office," says Brooke Weddle, a senior partner at McKinsey.
City councilors expressed support for the mayor's directive as a way to increase foot traffic in the city's core.
Despite the push for RTO, there tends to be 'wiggle room,' meaning most policies have some kind of flexibility built in.'".
