Efforts to legalize sports betting and casinos in Texas are facing significant obstacles due to a new wave of Republican legislators opposing such measures. Recent support from influential figures like Governor Greg Abbott is overshadowed by the opposition from newly elected lawmakers and some returning officials who have reversed their prior positions. Furthermore, without the necessary two-thirds majority for passage and significant support within the Republican caucus, the proposed bills are unlikely to advance this legislative session, jeopardizing their future.
We are confident this legislation does not have the votes necessary to pass the Texas House this session. Given the certainty of its failure, I urge you not to waste valuable committee time on an issue that is dead on arrival.
I might have three or four senators out of 20 Republicans who support it. That's it. They say, 'Oh, we almost passed it last session.' You know, they almost passed it with every Democrat voting for it and about one of four Republicans voting for it.
