Pocketpair, developer of Palworld, was taken by surprise when Nintendo and The Pokemon Company filed a lawsuit against them for alleged patent infringement last September. The community manager, John 'Bucky' Buckley, stated this news was unexpected and disheartening, significantly altering the studio's plans. Pocketpair believed they had fulfilled all legal checks prior to the game’s release in Japan. The lawsuit has required the team to reconsider their upcoming engagements and budget, stating the situation turned a previously exciting period into a depressed atmosphere while they managed the legal complexities ahead.
Buckley said of the suit, "This obviously came as a shock to us, I think it came as a shock to a lot of people because it's alleged patent infringement."
He added that Pocketpair had been "pretty vocal before Palworld released that we did legal checks before the game released, and they were all cleared - in Japan".
Buckley revealing that the lawsuit's arrival "changed a lot of things" for Pocketpair, affecting their planned release timeline and security measures.
"We were just about to go to Tokyo Game Show. Obviously, we had to kind of scale back a little bit and hire security guards and stuff like that."
