The poker room at Grosvenor Birmingham was transformed into a vibrant space on a Friday night, hosting a memorial tournament for Maxine Preston, a beloved figure in the local gambling scene. Although the stakes were low, the event paid tribute to her life as a prominent player who made friends and memories at the table. Organized by her close friend Michelle Bricknell-Sheils, the tournament included heartfelt touches such as Max's favorite sweets, bubbly drinks, and a fun nod to her favorite poker hand, reflecting the joy and camaraderie she inspired in those around her.
The G played host to a memorial tournament honoring Maxine Preston, a nightly tournament regular who recently passed after a battle with motor neuron disease.
Max and I met at Hill Street; she was playing in a casino for the first time...and from that moment on, we were firm drinking and poker mates.
We took poker as a bit of a laugh and it was always a bonus if we cashed. We would always say, 'Less drinking next time... That never happened though.'
The memorial featured plenty of reminders of Max's infectious energy. Her favorite sweets decorated each seat, and friends popped bubbly at nearly every table.
